Molly fish (Poecilia sphenops) are peaceful freshwater livebearers from Central and South America, native to coastal waters from Venezuela north to Mexico. They belong to the family Poeciliidae — the same family as guppies and platies. Like all livebearers, females give birth to live free-swimming fry instead of laying eggs, producing 20-150 fry per batch.
Mollies stand out from other community fish because of their water chemistry requirement: they need hard, alkaline water (pH 7.0-8.5, GH 15-30 dGH) per FishBase and SeriouslyFish. Mollies kept in soft or acidic water become significantly more susceptible to disease. They also tolerate brackish conditions — and can even live in full marine environments — a trait almost unique among common aquarium fish. Multiple species exist in the aquarium trade, with most being hybrids of P. sphenops (common molly), P. latipinna (sailfin molly), and P. wingei.

Tank Requirements
Minimum Tank Size
A 20-gallon tank is the minimum per SeriouslyFish (36×12×12”). A 30-gallon tank is recommended for a group of 6-10 mollies with room for breeding. Sailfin mollies need 30+ gallons due to their larger adult size (4-6 inches). Mollies are active swimmers that patrol the entire water column — longer tanks with more horizontal space are preferred. A lid is required because mollies are active jumpers.

Substrate
Fine gravel or sand — mollies are constant bottom foragers that sift substrate while feeding. Darker natural substrate enhances coloration. Sand is preferred for brackish setups because it’s easier to clean in marine conditions.
Plants and Decor
Live plants are highly recommended — dense plant cover provides key fry refuge when breeding occurs. Java Moss, Anubias, Hornwort, and Water Wisteria are all suitable. Floating plants like Frogbit dim overhead light and protect fry. Leave open mid-level swimming space — mollies are very active. Smooth rocks and driftwood work for decor; avoid sharp edges. Lighting and Filtration
Moderate lighting for 6-8 hours daily — a standard LED aquarium light is sufficient. Moderate water flow — a 100W adjustable heater maintains the 70-82°F range. Monitor with an AQUANEAT Digital Thermometer. Good biological filtration is critical — mollies produce significant waste for their size.
Brackish Water Option
Mollies uniquely tolerate brackish conditions (specific gravity 1.005-1.010) and can live in full marine environments per SeriouslyFish. Adding API Aquarium Salt (1 teaspoon per gallon) can improve health and reduce disease, especially for black mollies. This isn’t required for all setups but is beneficial. Brackish tanks limit compatible species choices — plan accordingly.

Hard, alkaline water is the single most important factor in molly health. SeriouslyFish warns that mollies are “more prone to disease when maintained in freshwater that is not hard and alkaline.” Wild mollies inhabit brackish coastal waters — captive-bred strains are more adaptable but still prefer harder water. Diet and Feeding
Natural Diet
Mollies are omnivorous. FishBase records a natural diet of worms, crustaceans, insects, and plant matter. SeriouslyFish notes they feed on “zoobenthos and detritus.” In captivity, they eat almost anything — but they need significant vegetable matter, not just protein.
Staple Foods
Omega One Freshwater Flakes as the daily staple — 1-2 small pinches, twice per day. Supplement with spirulina flakes and Hikari Algae Wafers for vegetable matter and a sinking feeding opportunity.
Treats
Hikari Freeze Dried Bloodworms — 1-2 times per week. Frozen brine shrimp and daphnia are also good protein treats. Avoid an exclusively meaty diet — long-term lack of vegetable matter causes digestive problems.
Feeding Schedule
Feed small amounts 2 times per day (what they consume in 2-3 minutes). Include one fasting day per week to prevent overeating. Mollies are greedy eaters — excess food fouls water quickly. Remove uneaten food after 3 minutes.
Breeding and Fry Care
Male vs Female Identification
Males are smaller (2.5-3 inches) with a modified anal fin called a gonopodium — long, pointed, and rod-shaped, used for internal fertilization. Females are larger (3-5 inches) with a rounder belly (especially when gravid) and a normal fan-shaped anal fin. Sailfin males develop an enlarged dorsal fin. Sexable at approximately 3-4 months of age per FishBase.
Mating and Gestation
Males actively pursue females, which is why a 2:1 or 3:1 female-to-male ratio is recommended. Gestation lasts approximately 28 days per FishBase, producing 20-150 fry. As birth approaches, the female’s belly becomes noticeably distended and boxy, and a dark gravid spot appears near the anal vent. Females can store sperm for multiple batches from a single mating.
Fry Care
Adult mollies will eat their own fry — they don’t provide parental care. SeriouslyFish recommends moving the gravid female to a separate breeding tank before birth, then returning her afterward. Breeding nets and traps aren’t recommended due to their small size. Fry are relatively large and accept baby brine shrimp or powdered flakes from birth. Keep the fry tank at 76-80°F for faster growth with daily small water changes. Dense Java Moss in the main tank allows some fry to survive naturally.
Population Management
One female can produce 20-150 fry every 4-8 weeks. A single pair can generate hundreds of fry per year. Plan for population growth before adding mixed-sex mollies. Options: keep only males (no breeding), separate males and females, rehome fry, or provide dense plant cover for natural attrition.
Compatible Tank Mates
Mollies are peaceful community fish, but their hard/alkaline water requirement narrows suitable tank mates. SeriouslyFish advises keeping them “only with fish that can tolerate the same water conditions.”

Common Health Issues

Shimmies (Livebearer Disease)
The most common molly-specific health issue. Fish rock or sway in place without moving forward, often with clamped fins. Caused by stress from cold water, poor water quality, or improper diet. Prevention: maintain proper temperature (70-82°F), hard/alkaline water, and a diet with adequate vegetable matter. Shimmies are often the first sign of unsuitable water conditions.
Ich (White Spot Disease)

Fin Rot

Swim Bladder Disorder
Caused by overfeeding and constipation. Affected fish struggle with buoyancy — floating at the surface or sinking. This is especially problematic for balloon mollies due to their compressed body shape. Prevention: avoid overfeeding, include vegetable matter, and maintain one fasting day per week.

Varieties
Most aquarium mollies are hybrids of P. sphenops, P. latipinna, and P. wingei. Decades of selective breeding have produced dozens of color morphs and body shapes. All varieties share the same core care requirements.
- Black Molly: The original aquarium molly — solid black, hardy, prefers harder water
- Dalmatian Molly: White/silver body with black spots — a visually striking hybrid variety
